About Sarah

Sarah Hickey is a TV series and commercial director with an eye for performance, comedy, beautiful cinematography, comedy, drama, comedy, and everything in between. Did we mention comedy?

Her heart lies in capturing honest performances that find that elusive balance between drama and comedy, and prides herself on her ability to embrace and prioritise the themes of a story, capturing that divinely within the frame.

Services

As the wearer of a few hats, check out Sarah’s full list of capabilities.

  • Sarah’s expertise in the TV series and narrative space span multiple genres within comedy, drama, children’s, adult, family, femme-centric, youth and teens.

  • Sarah effortlessly weaves her narrative and performance-based storytelling into commercial works that either lean into the absurd, have a playful tongue, or simply require a flair for the connective tissue of storytelling through a cinematic lens.

  • At her production company Monster & Bear, Sarah often finds herself at the helm of concept ideation, strategic thinking, and putting pen to paper for the scripting of commercial concepts. Her clients include the likes of Berocca, Visit Victoria, Disney, SBS, Peroni, Klook, MyConnect, KidSafe and Etsy to name a few.

  • Sarah’s versatility in voiceover work has been described as authentic, empathetic and humoured across a wide range of genres. Bringing with her to every recording, Sarah brings the heart of a writer, and a passion for connecting with words, regardless of whether the intention is to inform, inspire laughter, tug on the heart strings, or just tell it as it is.

  • Sarah has a slate of projects in development, with a majority focus on concepts that toe the line of comedy and drama within circumstances of absurdity. A keen people watcher, and follower of world events and evolutions, Sarah aims to weave hints of social commentary through her works, or to normalise taboo conversations, whatever they may be.

  • Having written for shortform, longform, advertising and educational content, Sarah has a knack for being a format chameleon. Having run writing workshops, brainstorms and contributing to series level writer’s rooms, Sarah loves taking the energy of what’s explored in the room, and sustaining that on the page.

  • "With complex episodes, a young cast and sometimes uncooperative puppets, Sarah handled the many challenges of production with calm professionalism, a collaborative spirit and a welcome sense of humour. Sarah prepared meticulously, with a focus on style and performance, while remaining conscientious of budget and schedule."

Andrea Denholm, Executive Producer, Tony Ayres Productions (Spooky Files)

  • “Sarah worked so well under the pressure of a tight, ambitious schedule and ambitious creative demands with a can-do attitude. Sarah can be very proud of her work creating a fantastic Episode 4 which I, the ABC & ACTF are all extremely happy with.”

Joanna Werner, Series Producer, Werner Productions (Crazy Fun Park)

  • "Sarah was highly respectful of the show’s look and feel and worked hard to deliver a high-quality episode that fit wonderfully within our world. Sarah was friendly and fun and this attitude trickled across all departments she worked with."

Melanie Sano - Series Creator (Planet Lulin)

  • "Sarah is gifted with charm, intellect, wit and enormous talent. A 'can do' attitude which beguiles all who work with her. Sarah's abilities are endless from researching, pitches, directing and editing all with a keen sense of humour. I worked with Sarah on Channel 10's 'My Life is Murder' and recently on ABC/NBCU's 'FIRES' and on both occasions was impressed".

Elisa Argenzio - Producer (FIRES, My Life Is Murder)

  • "Sarah is a talented and natural director. Her observations and contributions to the episodes were always astute, creative and appreciated. I would recommend her without reservation."

    Mat King - Director
(My Life Is Murder, Bloom, Pine Gap, How To Stay Married)
